Mundane x Sacred x Profane

Mundane x Sacred x Profane

In response to the invitation to participate in a group exhibition with Sakhile & Me Gallery, Frankfurt to create a series of work related to the concept of the Mundane, the Sacred and the Profane.

I chose to create a series of images that can represent each concept individually and together in the format of a triptych.

Focusing on the concept of dark, light, and the balancing of these energies in symbolic terms.

Mundane:

In this image, the light is represented by a white feather and the dark is represented by a black feather.

In esoteric terms, the right-hand path denotes the light/positive polarity, and the left-hand path denotes the dark/negative polarity.

In this performance to camera, I aim to balance both of these energies using a set of scales.

Sacred:

In this image, I embody the light/positive polarity through the avatar of an entity from the higher dimensions. Potentially an Ancestor.

This figure looks back at us through a magnifying glass; eyes and face enlarged through the prism of the glass.

Glowing white-gold and black.

They reside in the higher dimensions, and their role is to watch, to observe, to protect, to guide.

Profane:

In this image, I embody an entity, residing in the lower dimensions, whose intentions may not be so pure.

This figure also watches, observes, entices and invites us to indulge in negative behaviours that are aligned with materialistic values that limit our ability to transcend our base urges.

In spiritual and esoteric terms, these represent the Self, the Higher Self and the Shadow.

In psychological terms, this represents the Ego, the Superego and the Id.

These concepts have been described in myriad forms across many cultures.

This work invites us to consider our relationship to the notion of the Sacred and Profane and is underpinned by the principle:

‘As above, So below, As within, So without.’

It symbolically describes the human condition and how we all have the capacity to balance these energies within ourselves..
